The Crystal Hills of Polemi
Flakes

However, the good news is that next week, we will have a guest blog written by somebody who does know what they are talking about when it comes to minerals. If you are on facebook and want to receive a notification when that blog is published, you should like our page on facebook.

Sparkle!

This picture finally captures a bit of the sparkle I have been referring to. The sheen is almost like mother-of-pearl.
A Small Sample

This was a small bit of gypsum. Most of the hill is one massive lump, but there is the occasional chunk lying around.
Another Crystal Hill!

In the distance, I spotted what looked like another crystal plain. So we followed the track round to investigate.
The View from the Second Hill

The second hill was pretty much the same as the first. In springtime, the wild flowers are abundant, and the area is very beautiful. Do watch out for snakes though, if you are exploring the undergrowth.
If you are curious where the track goes, it loops around to a currently-abandoned farmstead. A few years ago we drove down there later in the year, and were greeted by a chained barking dog. So perhaps the farmer will return later in the year? There is room to turn round at the farm though, so it is worth visiting if only for that reason! And stay tuned, because as I said earlier, next week we will have a blog about minerals from somebody who actually knows what they are talking about!
