Village Life

If you want to experience the traditional Cypriot way of life then you should head for the villages. The pace of life is slower here, and sitting at a local coffee shop watching the world go by is often the best way to experience it. Soak up the atmosphere and take your time.

Paphos has a wide variety of villages to tempt the visitor. Starting from the west, we have the harbour of Agios Georgios, with its delightful beach and mysterious tombs in the cliffs. Heading East you have Coral Bay and Peyia - both tourist friendly, and the more residential areas of Emba, Kissonerga and Chloraka. It is often difficult to tell where one of these villages start and the other ends, but they each have their own charms.

To the east of Paphos you have several other villages, notably Geroskipou, Timi, Mandria and Koloni. But to really experience authentic village life, you need to head inland. You cannot help but notice that to the north of Paphos there is a large expanse of hills. Beyond those hills lie the vineyards of central Paphos. The countryside here is beautiful, and some of the villages will be bustling with life. Some will appear almost empty however. This is in part due to urban migration - young families moving to the city in search of work and a better standard of living - and partly due to Cypriots' fondness for a second, summer home in the cooler parts of the island.

There are far too many villages to name them all in this introduction, but here are a few of the ones we have already blogged about: Akourdaleia, Archimandrita, Argaka, Giolou, Kannaviou, Kathikas, Letymbou, Lysos, Polemi, Pomos, Simou and Statos Agios Fotios. A visit to any village in Paphos will be a fun experience. Just take your time and enjoy the ride.
If you get the opportunity, eat at a local village tavern. The food will be delicious, the portions plentiful, and the bill very modest indeed.
