Pano Arodes

Published 8th of May, 2019

Pano Arodes is one of the gateways to the Akamas. It is a charming village between Kathikas and Droushia. We will be featuring it in our next eBook, so recently visited it to do some research. Naturally enough, we took lots of pictures while we were there...

The Main Square

When you get to Pano Arodes, the Main Square is a good place to set up base camp. Find a place to park, get out and have a wander.

Getting There

To get there, you need to take the road from Kathikas to Polis. You will soon come to a signposted turning on the left.

Funny Farmstead

One of the first things you will note when you turn off the main road, is a rather unusual little farm. They seem to have allsorts here, including deer and peacocks. Peacocks are actually more common in Cyprus than you might think. We have found them on numerous occasions. If you are ever at the Petrol Station on the B7 by Stroumbi, you can sometimes hear them there too, as there are some in the fields behind the garage.

Keep Left

The villages can seem like mazes at first. Our rule of thumb is to stick to the main road the first time through, just to get the lie of the land. Then come back and explore more when you have a better idea of where things are. If you keep left on entering Pano Arodes, you will eventually come to this sign pointing to Ineia. Follow that to get to the main square.

Let's Explore!

Once parked up, it is time for a wander.

Abandoned Villages - Melandra

We first stumbled upon Melandra last Autumn. We were trying to find an interesting route from Pano Panagia to Polis, and having visited a number of isolated villages, decided to venture off-road. Souskiou Cemetery

Last spring we blogged about our visit to the abandoned village of Souskiou in the Diarizos Valley. We received numerous comments, some of which alluded to an ancient cemetery that lurked in the nearby hills. Well, this naturally piqued our curiosity, and we resolved to track them down. Over the next few months we made numerous excursions, and this is a summary of what we found...
