Paphos Caving
Surely Not?
After much hunting, and loud "I am here, snakes, so bugger off" sound effects, I eventually came across this small cave. However, it is tiny. You could probably wedge a space hopper in there, if you tried. There was no way on Earth I was going to crawl in there, because the ground was incredibly muddy and it smelled faintly of wee.
Try Again
On returning to the church, I noticed a small shrine under the cliff. I blogged about The Shrines at St George's Church almost a year ago, so had originally assumed it was more of the same. However, given that I had lucked out on the cave front, I thought a closer inspection was needed.
Looking Promising
As I headed towards the shrine it became clear that it was very much still in use.
Icons
A good proportion of the offerings were new, and candles still burned brightly in the, um, candle holder. I am sure there is a proper name for that small metal shed. Anyway, the candles are stored in there, along with some oil.
A Cave
Beyond the shrine, there was indeed a cave. It had a fairly small opening, but on ducking down I could see that it soon opened up again. However, on my first visit, I was completely unprepared, and was getting picked on by lots of flies, so I left with a view to return at a later date.
