From Polemi To Polis

Dodgy Road

I said the track got a bit hairy. This is what I meant. In my experience, the worst driving conditions aren't found in the mountains or on the Akamas, they are in the valleys. This isn't one of them, by any stretch of the imagination. But the valleys are criss-crossed with tracks that have been long abandoned and are part washed away. Some of them look fairly decent when you start but deteriorate rapidly. Also, if it has been raining, the best maintained tracks will become quagmires. We always carry a shovel with us, and I once had to dig us out of a mudbath in fading light, which was not much fun. So don't assume if you are out exploring, that a lack of a cliff means you will have a safe drive. Always ensure that if the worst comes to the worst, you can go back the way you came.

Skarfos Bridge

Spring is definitely on the way out. Compare this to how it looked last year.

The Road To Evretou

Briefly returning to tarmac past the bridge, we come to a signpost for Evretou. This is another off-road route though not too bumpy.

Superb Tree!

This tree reminded me very much of some of the magnificent specimens that grew in the woods back in the UK.

Evretou Mosque

At this point you have a choice. You can either head for Evretou and cut across the reservoir and up the track opposite, or head for Trimithousa by taking the turn to the right of this picture. For the sake of this blog, and because it was fun, we have taken both options. First, we went across the reservoir.

Simou

As promised at the end of our last blog about Skarfos Bridge, we now take a lot at the village of Skarfos, nestled 16km oustide of Polis, and see what it has to offer.

The butterflies have been keeping us all amused over the last few weeks. The Painted Ladies have been flying from Africa to Continental Europe, and stopping off in Cyprus to say hello...

Evretou Reservoir Is Full!

She took her time, but Evretou Reservoir is now full! On a glorious, sunny Friday morning, I took my camera out to record the moment, and Evretou didn't disappoint. It has taken me a long time to whittle down the pictures I took for this blog, but here are a selection of the best.

Abandoned Villages - Melandra

We first stumbled upon Melandra last Autumn. We were trying to find an interesting route from Pano Panagia to Polis, and having visited a number of isolated villages, decided to venture off-road. The countryside at the time was very brown and arid. So when we revisited the village this May, we hardly recognised the place.

Abandoned Villages - Istinjo

Istinjo is an abandoned little village, with an active farm, just east of Filousa. You won't find it on Google or Bing Maps, unless you opt for satellite view and locate it manually. We have driven past it on numerous times ourselves before we realised it was actually an old village; from the main road it looked more like a slightly ramshackle farm. We only found out it's name when we did our Polis route the other other day. However, on that occasion we decided to stop and have a bit of an explore. Given that we had been following roadsigns to Istinjo since Sarama, it only seemed fair. This is what we found...

Agios Charalambos

Let's take a little break from flowers. I know that Cyprus looks lovely in the Spring, and that it abounds with colour and life. But it' time to take a break. With the Polemi Tulip Festival fast approaching, and the knowledge that another road trip from Max is just around the corner too, I think we need to look at something without petals.

The Evretou Grave

Last time we walked around Evretou Dam, we observed a solitary grave on the opposite bank, half way up a hill. After the blog was published we were approached by somebody who keeps a log of the Turkish Cypriot Graves on the island. He hadn't a record of this one, so I promised to revisit the area and get more information...

Evretou Dam

Ever since we explored the abandoned villages of Evretou and Trimithousa, we have been meaning to return and have a look at the rest of the reservoir. A chance wrong turn gave us just the opportunity we needed, so off we went. It took us a few visits to get the full picture of the reservoir, but we saw some lovely scenery along the way...

Venetian Bridges: Skarfos

We have been meaning to look at Venetian Bridges for some time, so today I thought I would start with Skarfos, as this is easily accessible and is the Western-most Venetian Bridge that I am aware of. Situated just off the road to Simou from the B7, it may not be the most spectacular bridge Cyprus has to offer, but there are enough other attractions nearby to make it worth your journey, as you shall see...

Abandoned Villages - Trimithousa

While doing some research for the blog on the Abandoned Village of Evretou, I read how the villagers fled to the nearby village of Trimithousa, before eventually settling in the North. From this I deduced that Trimithousa itself might also be abandoned. So I looked it up on Google Maps, and decided to check it out...

Abandoned Villages - Evretou

Evretou is just off the B7 near Polis. It lies on the banks of the Evretou Reservoir, and is another sad testament to the troubles of 1974.

The Drive To Adonis Baths

Yesterday we posted a film showing the drive to Adonis Baths. It provoked a lot of comment, so here is the accompanying blog which will hopefully answer any questions.
