Paphos Kataklysmos Festival
The Kataklysmos Festival has descended on Paphos for the last four days, bringing some much needed crowds to the Sea Front and Harbour area. On Saturday we went down to join in the fun, and took some pictures while we were there...
Paphos Sea Front
Kataklysmos is a big deal in Cyprus. Known as the Festival of the Flood, it combines a number of traditions into four days of fun. Linked to Noah, Pentecost and pagan rituals relating to Aphrodite and Adonis, Kataklysmos is most celebrated in Larnaka. Paphos though, also joins in the fun.
Balloons
On Saturday Night the Sea Front was packed. It won't look it from some of these pictures, but I deliberately stepped into less crowded areas to take them. Otherwise, you would have seen lots of pictures of peoples backs. I have to say this though, because otherwise people will say "Oh it wasn't very crowded". It was crowded. It was heaving. On all four nights.
The night is the best time to see the stalls I think. They are nicely illuminated but the temperature is a bit cooler, so it isn't quite as stifling as the midday.
Traditional Stalls
You will find this kind of stall at most festivals in Cyprus. They are crammed with all sorts of goodies covering a wide variety of themes. Fishing rods jostle for position next to speakers and soft toys. I wonder how the growth of Temu affect their sales?
Games
There were a surprising number of hoop games too. Considering the likelihood of winning, it would probably be easier to cut your losses and buy a bottle of whiskey from the nearby Sklavenitis. But that wouldn't impress your date I guess.
