Typical Village Life

I took this rather odd shot just to showcase some typical Cypriot household objects. First you have the omnipresent solar-powered water tanks. These are everywhere. Below that, the funny grey dome is an outdoor clay oven. And behind that you can see some fig trees. I liked my fig tree when we first moved to Polemi. The figs tasted nice, but when it came to pruning the tree I got a bit cocky. I was unaware that fig tree sap can cause a rash, so I happily pruned the tree and plucked leaves from all the sticks. Soon I started developing tiny blisters on my hands, which quickly spread to my face. I popped down to Paphos to visit a chemist, and explained my symptoms. They gave me the appropriate cream, and within a day it had cleared up. But ever since then, if I even touch a fig or fig leaf, I will immediately begin to itch.

Walking down the road past the church will lead you to a T junction. This is the back road to Stroumbi. Turn right at this junction, and you will come to another junction where you need to turn left. Next to the junction you will find this house, with lots of garden ornaments.

Cat Napping

There is also a water feature here, with a resident Bagpuss on top.

Blue Bird

This is one of the more photogenic ornaments.

Another Fire

As you continue along the path, you will come to a turning on your right, and evidence of yet another field fire. We are going straight on here, so ignore the right turn.

The Twelve Churches of Polemi

A while ago we reviewed a new map book on Cyprus. We noted that it showed a lot of churches in Polemi that we were unaware. Many of them were in ruins now, but we thought they deserved to be seen. So join us as we visit them all, or at least, what's left of them.

The Polemi Community Project

The Community Spirit is alive and well in at least one corner of Paphos! In Polemi, a group of volunteers, with the help of the local Mukhtar, are converting an area of wasteland into a Community Garden for the whole of Polemi to enjoy. A few days ago we paid them a visit to see how things were progressing.

Polemi Concentration Camp

As you approach Polemi from the B7, you pass the Kamanterena Winery on your right. Just beyond that, if you are paying attention, you will see a lookout tower that wouldn't look out of place on a WW2 movie. A couple of ancient armoured vehicles might also perk your interest, so pull over, and take a look at Polemi Concentration Camp.

The Polemi Countryside

The last couple of blogs have been a bit intense, so we thought we would chill out and go for a stroll through the Polemi Countryside, and take a look at the flora, fauna, and interesting gypsum formations that can be found in our beautiful Cyprus scenery...

Polemi in 500 Metres

I went for a stroll around Polemi this morning. I didn't use the SMS service, so had to stay within 500 metres of our house. Turns out the light was fantastic and I was able to take some nice pictures, assisted in part, by one of our cats who decided to follow me on my travels...

Polemi Sunrise

A couple of days ago I was up bright and early running some errands, and I couldn't help but notice the beautiful sunrise. Naturally enough, I took some pictures, and this put me in the mood to take some more snaps as I carried out my chores...
