Parting Shot

Time to pack the drone away for now. I wanted a final shot of the village though, showing the hill in the background. Getting to the top of that hill can be quite a challenge. There are many farm tracks that zigzag across the fields, but most of them are dead-ends. If you do make it all the way, you will be treated with probably the best views in Paphos.

Old Memories

Meanwhile, back on Terra Firma, Alex managed to find a burnt mattress to photograph. Bit of a odd segue but there you go. Now, let's look at some happier pictures...

Vretsia Fauna

If you explore Vretsia you are likely to come across some farm animals at some point. In the past we have been mobbed by friendly donkeys. Today Alex managed to track down a horse.

Fly Haven

There were quite a lot of flies buzzing around. Personally it would drive me mad, but farm animals seem to be used to it.

There are farms further up the valley, towards Koilineia. I think the horses and ponies live up there. They certainly walk between the two locations. They leave a trail of manure when they do, so if you are in the area and want some compost, bring a bucket and spade and you might get lucky!

Abandoned Villages - Vretsia

Cyprus has more than it's fair share of abandoned villages. The troubles caused the displacement of both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. The environment itself has caused other villages to be abandoned for reasons of safety. Whatever the reason, the abandonment caused emotional pain and suffering to the affected people. So is it right to right a series of blog articles on them? I thought about this for a while, but decided that yes it was. Cyprus is a land built on antiquities, and these villages are just the latest example. I had no problem blogging about a Necropolis after all. However, some of these villages, and especially Ventris, do still get visits from the displaced families. So if you do decide to visit these places on the strength of these articles, please bear that in mind, and treat them with respect. The urban exploring motto "take only pictures, leave only footprints..." nicely sums it up.

Vretsia Tavern

We recently did a blog on the abandoned village Vretsia. Until recently, a tavern still operated there. Unfortunately, last summer it appears to have burnt down. It is now a very eerie place to visit...
