Paphos Desalination Plant
Last year the Desalination plant in Paphos burnt to the ground after an electrical fault. They have been hard at work rebuilding it and according to Press reports it is due to re-open in August. We took our drone down to see how they were getting on.

Cyprus has a problem with water. The Kouris Reservoir - which feeds Limassol - is currently under 17% full. The Asprokremmos Reservoir which serves Paphos has 19%. The Mavrokolympos, which keeps the banana growers in Kissonerga watered, is currently empty, and waiting to be repaired.
Men At Work

So when the desalination plant at Kouklia burnt down in December of last year, it was a bit of a blow. Now admitedly, the plant hadn't been open that long, but prior to the fire it was supplying Paphos with a significant proportion of its water needs. Its peak output was 15,000 cubic metres daily, against Paphos' total daily requirement of 45,000.
A Few Years Ago...

The desalination unit had a bit of a shaky start. It was built in 2010 but barely used, and decommisioned a few years later. When we first visited the Desalination Plant in 2017, it looked like this.

Since then, it was rebuilt and burnt down again. Now it is once again being rebuilt.

They are certainly hard at work on it at the moment. But when will it be completed?
