Cyprus scrubs up well!

Agios Georgios

If you have made it up the hill looking for the church I am afraid you are in for a bit of a disappointment. This is pretty much all there is to see. The views are a blinder though.

So what of the history? Let's have a look at the nearby sign:

Agios Georgios chapel, which is found by an oak (quercus coccifera) is the ruin of an early Byzantine church dedicated to St George. According to historical sources it is certain that the village was inhabited during the Byzantine period as several ruins have been found of Early Byzantine churches dedicated to a number of Saints.

The Aforementioned View

I never tire of the countryside around here.

Church Ruins

If you wade through the undergrowth, making suitable snake-scaring-stamps as you do so, you will find the remains of church foundations. Really nothing to write home about though.

Good Tree

In fact, this nearby tree was more interesting, and a handy place to stop for a rest in the shade, if you have reached here on foot.

Anyway, the track peters out by the remains of this church, so you need to return all the way down the hill to the Information Sign about the Stroumpi Lion. It is time for a close-up look.

The Crystal Hills of Polemi

We were introduced to the Crystal Hills a few years back. It was the first time we visited Polemi and we were on the hunt for geocaches. This particularly one was a near perfect example of what makes a good cache: an interesting location that we would have been unlikely to find had there not been a cache there. The only thing that let the cache down was it's size, but we won't go into that here. Instead we shall have a look at the terrain, and see why the cache was called "The Crystal Hill".
