There you go. This is the Big Wheel at Pripyat, the abandoned industrial town next to Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Today I learned that the town itself was only constructed in 1970, but grew into a community of nearly 50,000 inhabitants before being evacuated. For some reason I had assumed it was much older than that.

The Chernobyl Mural was actually painted over an existing piece which you can see here. This was called Pygmalion and Galatea and depicts the myth of the sculptor who falls in love with his own statue. You might consider it a crime to paint over this masterpiece, but by the time the Chernobyl advert was commissioned it had pretty much faded away.

They haven't finished renovating Old Town yet either. There is still plenty of work to be done.

I had reached the ring road again now, and didn't want to go up it as that would mean crossing over the road, and I was using it to act as a natural border. It is difficult putting together a multi-part walk that covers everything I want to show in Old Town, and it helps to break it down into more manageable chunks. So instead, I turned round and headed back past Cosmos.
