Paphos Old Town In 2023 - Part 1

Deceptively Spacious

It is worth pointing out that a lot of the stalls are actually annexes of bricks and mortar shops you can enter behind them. So the market is bigger than you might initially think. Be sure to check out the interiors too.

Cyprus Staple

I don't know why but artificial cocks have been a Gift Shop Essential for as long as I can remember in Cyprus. This has always surprised me, given the importance that the Church has in every-day Cypriot life.

One thing missing amongst this tat though is the Pink Panther. I am now referring to the cartoon character rather than some variation on an unruly member. You may recall in our reports on festivals in Cyprus, that Pink Panther toys are remarkably popular. You never see anybody buying one, yet all the stalls seem to offer them for sale. I don't think I saw a single one in the Old Town Market though.

Central Water Feature

I wonder if that's drinking water? This tap is a good meeting point when you are exploring the market though. It is centrally located and easy to find. Plus there is only one of them.

More Bustle

Towards the front of the market people were starting to arrive. The umbrellas nearly cover the market here, so it is more reminiscent of the old covered area.

Cyprus Lace

There is a lot more to the market than the gift shops. You can buy Cyprus Lace here too. And be sure to go into the shop behind the stall as well.
