The Eledio Quartz Mines

Do sinkholes exist in Cyprus?

There are sinkholes in Cyprus and their existance is always related to the presence of gypsum. Nisou - Pera Chorio, Tochni, Aradippou, Maroni, Kalavasos, Peramos and Mouttagiaka are the areas in Cuprus where sinkholes (underground caverns) were discovered. In most cases, the sinkholes were located inside or close to the river bed and appeared after intenserainfall events causing an increased river flow.

Karstic features can also be observed in carbonate rocks. Characteristic big karstic structures in carbonate rocks have developed in the Pentdactylos mountains. These structers are often accompanied by big springs (kefalaria), which (for now) are all dried up.

There was more text, describing surveys etc. I won't repeat it all here though. I think that is enough for one blog!

So there you have it. Eledio Mine is in fact not a mine, but a sinkhole. Does that mean that Eledio is not worth a visit? Not a bit of it! This viewpoint alone is spectacular!

Oh, and don't build a house on gypsum.

So why is a non-existent mine promoted, at the expense of a very real viewpoint? I don't know. But if you come for the quartz mine, you will certainly stay for the views. And while you are in the area, explore the countryside and marvel at the naturally occurring gypsum formations. And in fairness to the good people of Eledio, they hadn't gone out of their way to promote "The Quartz Mines of Eledio". I had to have a good old rummage on the internet for it.

The Crystal Hills of Polemi

We were introduced to the Crystal Hills a few years back. It was the first time we visited Polemi and we were on the hunt for geocaches. This particularly one was a near perfect example of what makes a good cache: an interesting location that we would have been unlikely to find had there not been a cache there. The only thing that let the cache down was it's size, but we won't go into that here. Instead we shall have a look at the terrain, and see why the cache was called "The Crystal Hill".
