Maps Galore

I don't know very much about Geology, or Paleontology for that matter. One thing I have learned since moving to Cyprus is that it is a Geologist's paradise. There are a huge variety of rock formations here. Consequently, maps of Geological Regions can be a bit overwhelming.

When we entered the museum we immediately came to a T Junction, and turned left. The first area here led to exhibits involving animals. So I guess this is the Paleontology section.

Phanourios Minor

This is the Cypriot Pygmy Hippopotamus. Now extinct, it is the smallest hippopotamus of all known insular hippopotamuses. It got that way through the process of insular dwarfism. What's that, you may ask? Well it is one aspect of the "Island Effect", whereby isolated colonies of a species change. Small animals get big, and vice verca. If you want any more information on that Wikipedia is your friend.

Hippo Bones

Originally the first human inhabitants of Cyprus were thought to have driven the diminutive hippo to extinction. However, more recent studies indicate that they may have just been using their bones. IE, the hippos died out, then years later humans arrived and found some handy, ready-made toothpicks etc.
