A Bitter Pill...

Having stamped their authority, the boss cat decided to pose for a bit.

Peep!

This cat was a bit more shy.

Overgrown

Pano Arodes is doing quite well for itself. Most of the houses are in use, and a lot of the others look like they are inhabited during certain times of the year. If you see a drive like this, it doesn't necessarily mean the house is abandoned. My back garden can look like that if I stop weeding for a few weeks. Though I have to say, it does tend to mean that the first few days of any summer visit to the country pile will involve a lot of gardening in the heat.

Original Features

I like being able to see stuff like this, as it gives you a good indication of what the abandoned villages in Melandra etc must once have looked like. Pano Arodes was Greek Cypriot during the troubles, unlike its neighbour, Kato Arodes. Consequently, the houses wouldn't have been abandoned in the 70s. They will have been abandoned later, as a result of urban flight, where the younger generation moves to the city looking for work.

The upshot of this is that the ruins are in better nick.

Abandoned Villages - Melandra

We first stumbled upon Melandra last Autumn. We were trying to find an interesting route from Pano Panagia to Polis, and having visited a number of isolated villages, decided to venture off-road. Souskiou Cemetery

Last spring we blogged about our visit to the abandoned village of Souskiou in the Diarizos Valley. Over the next few months we made numerous excursions, and this is a summary of what we found...
