Kato and Pano Kivides

Nestled in the hills to the north west of Limassol, Kano and Pano Kivides are two abandoned villages that have different stories to tell. A couple of weeks ago we visited them to see what they had to say...

One of the first things we noticed when we drove through the village was the amount of cars. So why was Pano Kivides abandoned? There is a big church here, so it obviously wasn't a Turkish Cypriot village abandoned in the troubles. No, this village has suffered the same fate as Statos, Agios Fotios and Theletra. It was built on unstable ground. Well, the ground probably wasn't unstable when they built it, but flooding and erosion forced the authorities to act in 1970.
