Abandoned Villages: Istinjo

Vines

This house has been overcome by vines. It sits next to the water feature. I wonder if they all stem from that one trunk? Note also, the strange contraption below the vines. We will take a closer look at that in a moment.

Mmmmmmm

Lots of grapes there. We left them alone though, in case the farmers wanted them.

An Old Generator

On a previous abandoned village blog, a reader commented how none of the villages were connected to the grid. IE, they had no electricity. I pointed out at the time that Vretsia was wired up, but since then, I have kept an eye out as we tour these villages, to see just how well connected they were. This generator, and the lack of any wall sockets in the ruins, would indicate that Istinjo was powerless.

Tree Ruins

So what of Istinjo itself? Well, it does have a record in the PRIO database, and that informs us that prior to 1974 there were some 200 people living here. It also gives us a clue, albeit a little one, as to where the name Istinjo came from.

A lot of Istinjo is now clearly in ruins.

From this I deduced that Trimithousa itself might also be abandoned. So I looked it up on Google Maps, and decided to check it out...

Nestled on the side of the Stavros tis Psokas valley, it is easy to miss Zacharia. Agios Charalambos

Let's take a little break from flowers. I know that Cyprus looks lovely in the Spring, and that it abounds with colour and life. But it' time to take a break. With the Polemi Tulip Festival fast approaching, and the knowledge that another road trip from Max is just around the corner too, I think we need to look at something without petals.

Abandoned Villages - Melandra

We first stumbled upon Melandra last Autumn. We were trying to find an interesting route from Pano Panagia to Polis, and having visited a number of isolated villages, decided to venture off-road. The countryside at the time was very brown and arid. So when we revisited the village this May, we hardly recognised the place.

A couple of weeks ago I had an errand to run down in Polis. It was a clear, sunny day, so I took the camera and went the scenic route. Well, two scenic routes, as it turned out. So join us on this trip through the Paphos countryside....

From Kannaviou To Polis Off Road

Yesterday was one of those days where we just set off with no real destination in mind, but with a picnic and our swimming costumes packed in the back of the 4x4. We were starting our adventure near the Kannaviou Reservoir, but had no idea where we would end up...
