Is Cyprus Running Out Of Water?

Downstream

Compared to the Asprokremmos, it was a less popular event when it overflowed, back in 2020. Most of the excitement was on this side of the dam.

Back In 2020

When it went, new waterfalls appeared overnight. It was spectacular. And the outlet from the water treatment plant which you can see towards the bottom right was a huge jet.

This actually brings up a side point about what happens when reservoirs overflow. When the Asprokremmos went in 2019, it was overrun with silt and mud from the Xeros Valley. I remember vividly the outflow from the Water Treatment Plant looked like something out of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Kouris Overflow

Unlike the Asprokremmos, the overflow at the Kouris Reservoir is at 90 degrees to the rest of the dam. If you visit the Evretou it is even more unusual, as the overflow and the dam are in completely different locations!

And this is how it looks on the rare occasions that the Kouris overflows.

Number Crunching

So let's look at some data. The above chart can be found here. Bear in mind though, that the chart gets updated regularly, so it might not look the same as this one, which was current on the 7th October. I have removed data not relating to the Asprokremmos or Kouris, to make it easier to follow. There are a number of things to note:

  • 2018/2019 was very wet.
  • In 2023/2024 we had the 2nd lowest rainfall in the last 10 years.
  • In 2023/2024 the Asprokremmos lost nearly 30% of its water.
