Foinikas Heights
Impressive Rock Formations
You have to admit though, that some of these rock formations are pretty spectacular.
One Last View
So there you have it. Stunning rock formations, and glorious countryside, all on the doorstep to Paphos.
If you do decide to visit though, please take your rubbish home with you. If you carried your water bottle up with you, you can carry it down again too.
As well as these photos, I have also added a 360 tour to the panorama section. You can see that in the links below too. There is also some footage of me driving through Foinikas. I am currently experimenting with recording techniques though, and some of them are more successful than others.
The Map
I have made a map, showing how you can get to Foinikas from the motorway and from Nata. I have a separate route (in blue on the map), which is, or was, a fun track if you enjoy off-roading. I say "was", because over winter, a lot of the track had been washed away.
Don't Go This Way Out
I found this out the hard way. I was driving up, and I had made it just past this spot, but the Pajero would go no further. There were too many holes and not enough road. So I reversed, but got two of the wheels stuck in the central crevis.
Luckily I had some appropriate tools in the back of the car, and I was able to fill in the crevice the car was stuck in, and give the wheels some more room to manoeuvre at the sides. The area at the forefront of the picture used to be a big hole.
Leave This For Hikers
I didn't take a picture of the car actually stuck. When I get in hairy situations the old survival instincts kick in and taking pictures is not a survival instinct! It is a shame as it would have made a funny shot, in retrospect at least.
The final shot above, shows how I misjudged my rescue attempt too. I thought if I filled in the crevice behind the car as well, it would make reversing a lot easier. However, I underestimated the turning circle of the Pajero, and it missed most of my work.
The important point I want to make here though, is to show that if something unexpected does happen while you are exploring, you need to have the proper tools to be able to deal with it. At the very least, make sure you have the facilities to change your tyre, and are able to do so. Also, carry a shovel or a zapper with you. A zapper is like a shovel, but the head is at 90 degrees to the handle. It is perfect for the terrain in Cyprus. Finally, make sure you have plenty of water.
When I had dug my way out of this mess, I reversed down the slope and returned to Paphos on the usual route. If you do decide to visit Foinikas and the beautiful surrounding countryside I have shown a glimpse of here, take my advice and stick to the main track!

We just can't keep away from Foinikas. Somebody posted some pics of the abandoned village on our Paphos Chat facebook group, and people were asking how to get there. We bumped an old blog showing the route, but decided that a film was also needed. Foinikas has a special place in our family's hearts. It was the first abandoned village we explored in Cyprus, some ten years ago. We have returned to it each time we visited Cyprus, and consquently have more pictures than we could ever possibly want of the village and surrounding area. We posted some of them on our blog about the Asprokremmos Reservoir. We wanted some up-to-date photos for the Abandoned Village blog series. So last saturday we revisited Foinikas, and couldn't believe what we found when we got there...Foinikas Revisited
When we first blogged about Foinikas it was springtime, and the abandoned village was bathed in a sea of yellow. It was always an essential destination on our holidays, but we had never been in Spring, so it came as a pleasant surprise. However, it made it difficult to explore, as you never know what you might tread on when you have to wade through thigh-high flowers. As frequently happens with our blogs, people posted more information about the site in the comments. So we decided to pay another visit a few days ago, and explore it in more depth...Should We Be Worried About Our Water?
