The Diarizos Valley
Maronas

Time for another abandoned village on our drive up the valley. From Mamonia, you continue along the road until you get to the village of Agios Georgios. Like Fasoula, this has a mosque and a church. Beyond this village, you will come to a right turn pointing to Maronas. The road may or may not be bumpy. The last time we visited they had laid a new surface which a truck had promptly driven through. But the village itself is a beautiful yet poingnant place. Imagine what it must have been like in its heyday?
It is possible to continue along the track after Maronas. You will eventually arrive on the Archimandrita to Dora road. This route though, should only be attempted in a 4x4.

Agios Savvas Tis Karonas

We actually missed this one when we were putting the series together, so have added it now. After Maronas you come to the Extreme View Cafe and what remains of the old village of Prastio. Just before that there is a turning that will take you to this lovely abandoned monastery.
Gerovasa

We are going to take a slight diversion now, on our journey up the valley. Once you get past the village of Kidasi you have a choice. You can either follow the main road towards Paphos Forest and Troodos, or you can take the old road to Dora. This drives through Two abandoned villages and a lovely old temporary bridge built 70 odd years ago, and still standing.
So we are going to take the Dora road, as least as far as Trozena. Before we get there though, we arrive at the abandoned village of Gerovasa.
Trozena

If you can make it across the rickety bridge there is another site to see before we return to the valley. Trozena was the neighbouring village to Gerovasa. Being Greek Cypriot, it wasn't abandoned due to the invasion. Instead, people left in the Nineties, because of its remoteness. There do appear to be a couple of buildings still in use, possibly during the summer months, and the church still functions. The rest of the village now lies in ruins though.
The area does has one more surprise in store, and we will deal with that in the next picture.
Trozena Waterfall

On your way back to the valley, when you have crossed the rickety bridge again, and are heading back towards Gerovasa, take a look to your left. You will see the cliffs which Trozena is nestled on top of. They have an interesting rock formation. The reason for this will become apparent should you happen to visit the area after a period of prolonged heavy rain. Alternatively, you can read this article, and marvel at nature's awesome display of power.
