Avakas Gorge
Onwards And Upwards
As you progress up the gorge the trail does become easier. However, at times you need to pick your route carefully, as you will be presented with multiple options. It isn't all as straightforward as this picture suggests.
Avakas Cairn
There is a bit of a tradition in Cyprus for building cairns. The White River Beach just before you get to the gorge is normally full of them. Officially I should disapprove of them, as naturists will tell you that they are actually damaging to the environment. But to be honest I am rather fond of them.
Speaking of cairns, did you know that when they removed all the cairns at the top of Ben Nevis a few years ago, they actually found a Piano under one of them? Apparently it had been covered up in the 70s, after it had been carried to the summit to raise money for charity. They couldn't be arsed to carry it back down again, so they left it there under a big pile of rocks.
Goat Warning
Not sure whether this skull was put here to scare goats or to warn humans that goat trails aren't always all they are cracked up to be? Anyway, if a goat can die here, a human can too, a lot more easily!
Stubborn Tree
I love how this tree is growing out of the side of the rock. The initial seed didn't land in the ideal location, but that didn't deter it.
Bed Time
Now this was a surprise. I think this was the bed of a truck at one point. The question is, was it washed down the gorge following repeated floods, or did it fall down from above?

Cyprus has an abundance of beautiful gorges. Most people know about Avakas, but there are many others. Petratis Gorge first came to our attention when we visited the Akamas Geology Centre. We saw it pictured and felt it needed further investigation. A quick google revealed that it was remarkably close to the Northern town of Latchi. So we set out to see what we could find. We weren't disappointed, as you shall see...Good Pages To Visit
