Signs Galore

There are numerous signs along the route telling you about points of interest. I only wish I could remember what they said for more than 30 seconds.

River Crossing

The reason there is a gorge here is because a stream flows through the Akamas and has carved its way through the hillside. That stream is still flowing, so you will have to navigate it as you make your way up the gorge.

No Entry!

This I did not expect to see! There is a faint goat trail on the right wall here. A goat will be able to use it to climb out of the gorge. It is actually quite impressive to watch, and I am always amazed that the gorge floor is not full of dead goat carcasses that have slipped and fell.

However, you are not a goat, so don't try and follow it. Presumably they have put this sign here because somebody tried to do just that. It probably didn't end well.

If you follow the route up the gorge, it is obvious when you eventually get to the correct way out. You will see that later on in the article. If you take the first goat path you come across, you will end up somewhat out on a limb.

Stunning Cliffs

It doesn't take long before you are deep within the gorge, surrounded by steep, imposing cliffs. They look pretty spectacular too.

We're now at the narrowest part of the gorge. It continues in this vein for a while. On previous visits, as we walked up the gorge, we would find a number of dead birds that had fallen to the ground from the steep sides. We didn't see any on this visit, and can only presume that that was because we were here in the Autumn rather than the late Spring / early Summer.

Petratis Gorge - Part 1

Cyprus has an abundance of beautiful gorges. Most people know about Avakas, but there are many others. Petratis Gorge first came to our attention when we visited the Akamas Geology Centre. We saw it pictured and felt it needed further investigation. A quick google revealed that it was remarkably close to the Northern town of Latchi. So we set out to see what we could find. We weren't disappointed, as you shall see...
