St George's Grotto
Closer to home, we had great fun exploring St George's Church and Shrine Caves. Apparently, one of the caves (presumably the fenced off one) runs all the way under Geroskipou Square, though the air was very bad. We were content to just admire the icons which had been placed within it's walls.
Vretsia
Visiting abandoned villages in Cyprus is always a bittersweat experience. While it is fun exploring deserted places, the tragedy associated with them cannot be ignored. So we have always made a point of treating them with respect.
We have always liked Vretsia, because it one of the main entrances to Paphos Forest. It used to have a seasonal tavern too, though unfortunately that burnt down in 2016. On another blog, we do report that the tavern has since been cleaned up, so who knows, perhaps it will open again in the future?
March: Ezousa Valley
When Spring arrived we were amazed with the transformation that occurred to the Paphos countryside. We travelled from Ezousa Valley to the sea and loved what we saw along the way.
Far Side of the Akamas
One weekend in March I had the house to myself, so I took the opportunity to visit a geocache in the back of beyond, on the Far Side of the Akamas. It was a glorious Spring morning and I loved the adventure.
Foinikas
We have been visiting Cyprus for about 10 years before we moved here. Foinikas was the first abandoned village we found. It has an ancient history, far older than the recent troubles. However, when we returned to the village in March, we couldn't believe what we found. It wasn't our only blog about Foinikas in 2017 either. In October we returned, to follow up on some of the information people had given us in March.
