The Twelve Churches of Polemi

Panayia Chryseleousa

The site of Panayia Chryseleousa was easy enough to locate, as it was at a junction. However, there was no sign of any church here, other than this wall. We drove up and down the road a few times, but there was nothing else to see. We did manage to confuse a Yiayia who was sat outside a nearby house though. The first time we passed her she smiled, but I think after the fourth time the smile was getting a bit strained.

Profitis Elias

We are back in the centre of Polemi now, at the Church of Prophet Elias.

Elijah or Greek form Elias was, according to the Books of Kings in the Hebrew Bible, a prophet and a miracle worker who lived in the northern kingdom of Israel during the reign of King Ahab. In 1 Kings 18, Elijah defended the worship of the Hebrew God over that of the Canaanite deity Baal.

Lots of Cats

There were lots of cats at this church. This is only a few of them.

One Final Look At The Map

So we have three sites still to visit, and they all feature previously unknown churches.

Ayia Anastasia

This was the closest we got to Ayios Anastasia. Actually, we got further up the hill, and found a house. There was a shrine in the garden too, which could have been put there to mark the site of an old church. However, before I could photograph it a ferocious guard dog started barking at us, so we moved away. You can see him here.
