Picnic Area

This is why we keep coming back to Archimandrita. Up that track is a nice picnic area, with benches, running water and swings for the kids.

Water Feature

The water features of Archimandrita all sport the Cypriot shield, as opposed to the usual ER. They are dated 1963 so are late additions to the genre.

School House

Having finished with the cave and picnic area, we took a short stroll back down the hill to see what I believe to be the school. On the far side of this building there was a tennis net. The only thing that puzzles me about the school theory is all the overhead lighting you can see. Perhaps the building doubles as a night time social centre? You certainly couldn't kick a football about here without breaking some lightbulbs.

The Local Church

Next to the school there is a church. There is a very nice multi-part geocache in Archimandrita. One of the clues can be obtained by counting all the crosses on this church. I am not sure if they are all showing in this photo, so you will have to check for yourself. The cache was good fun, and takes you to the old abandoned village of Kato Archimandrita for the final location. I never did find the cache itself though. I got to the correct location but a goat had recently died, and it's corpse stank the entire area out, so I left the cache for another day.

The Archimandrita you are seeing in these shots is in fact, Pano Archimandrita. The residents of Kato Archimandrita moved here because there village was just too remote, and lacked such essentials as a school and decent water supply.

Church Bell

Originally I thought the megaphones were used instead of an actual bell. But here you can see the bell intact, complete with rope. So why do churches in Cyprus have these megaphones? Do they get so crowded inside that latecomers have to remain in the carpark?
