Reservoir Water Levels - September 2025
Take Care
If you are tempted to explore this area, please take care. If your car gets stuck in the mud it can be very difficult to get it out again. I speak from experience in this matter!
Distant Foinikas
Hopefully this will be water again in a few months. Historically, the reservoirs tend to operate on a 7 year cycle. This year, is the 7the year of that cycle, and if the pattern persists we will have a very wet winter. However, in recent times, weather patterns have become somewhat unpredictable. So who knows what will happen.
Old Bridge
When the reservoir is low, this route to Foinikas becomes navigable again. I don't know how old that bridge is, and whether it is Venetian or not, as claimed on Google, but it does lead to the old Knights Templar Stronghold, so who knows?
It was obviously built before the reservoir, when all this would have been dusty plains.

You can drive over that. I had a closer look at it, but couldn't see any stamps with construction date or anything on it. So who knows how long it has been there.
What Next?
It is obvious that Cyprus cannot rely on its existing reservoirs to supply a growing population with water. More desalination plants have been constructed, with more to come. Coupled with more boreholes the powers that be are trying to get on top of the situation. But there seems to be so much talk involved, and so little action. I was dismayed to hear that they were putting the repair of the Mavrokolympos out to tender. At this rate, it won't be repaired before the winter rains, and then it will be completely useless for another year. Similarly a water source completed up near Pomos is not yet producing water, because two departments cannot decide who is responsible for it. This is ridiculous. Grown up thinking is needed to solve the water woes of Cyprus, not petty squabbles and damaged egos.
