The Paphos to Polis Motorway - Part 1
Marathounta Valley

We have now reached the outskirts of Marathounta. To the right of this shot is that church on the hill. The motorway will run through the right hand side of this picture.

This Way

If you take the right hand turn here you come to another church on a hill. We will be going left. The motorway goes between the two. The maps showing the plans do seem to allow for tunnels and bridges for some of these tracks, but not all of them.
Looking Back

Before progressing, we turned to look back at the valley we came through. It certainly is picturesque. Note also, the dead and dying fennel. This is some of the same fennel that featured in a previous blog we wrote last winter.
Fennel is my new best friend. It is about the only plant I can grab hold of to hoist my way up a hill without pricking me with a nasty thorn.
Odd Dump

Rather bizarrely, or not, depending on your view of Cypriot recycling, lots of car parts have been dumped in a field here. Given that the motorway will come through here, perhaps they are hoping that the road builders will dispose of them.
That Way

This shot was taken near the third church I mentioned. The motorway will run straight into the middle of this picture.

Geroskipou Bypass
It has been announced that there is to be a new bypass built between Paphos and Geroskipou. Responses to this news were mixed, but we think it is a good idea. We decided to visit the area to see where the bypass will go and who it will benefit. Besides, the map had shown that there was a flea market in the area. eBookCyprus Road Trip 01: the Kathikas - Panagia Loop
Let me take you on a journey around the region of Paphos, Cyprus. Starting at Paphos itself, we travel to Akoursos, then Kathikas, Kritou Terra and Simou. We continue past Lasa and Kannaviou, before taking in the delights of Panagia. Getting a bit more adventurous, we visit the abandoned villages of Statos and Agios Fotios, before passing through Choulou, Letymbou and Polemi, and rejoining the main Paphos - Polis road.
The route is suitable for all types of vehicle, and requires no off-roading. The guide contains about 130 photographs including shots of all the road signs you need to pay attention to, as well as some of the highlights you may experience along the way.
There are also several maps which will help you keep your bearings.
