Moundiko Nature Trail - Part 2
Sign 11

The track progresses without much incident until it arrives at the final sign of the walk.
The route continues through a dense - relatively young - cluster of Valabrian pine trees (Pinus brutei) and reaches a forest landmark. At this point there is a change in the soil colour to bright red (terra rossa). This colour is due to insoluble iron ocides, especially hemtite, which results from the sissolution of calcium carbonate of the limestone and its transport from rain water in this short part of the route, besides the Pachna chalks, limited presence of much younger (one-billion-year-old) rocks, such as calceraeou sandstones and coarse limestones are observed. THe route continues uphill, passing parallel to the edge of the Farkonia gorge with panoramic views.
At a distance, at the coastal zone, there are the proteted Lara-Toxeftra protected bays where the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) and the green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) breed. After a route of a total length of 10.5km (without the bypasses), we reach the sign / point 7 where the circular part of the route ends. We then follow the same linear route back to Kathikas. The circular par(signs / posts 7, 8, 9, 10,11,7) is approximately 5km.

Nearly There

Time for a final push up the hill.
We've Made It!

Finally we are back at the start of the loop. From here you will either be walking back to the car park, or all the way back to Kathikas, depending on where you parked your car.
Edited Highlights
I filmed the entire route as I walked around. I was tempted to turn it into a hyperlapse film, but instead I decided to provide some edited highlights.
Actual Map

I shall leave you with this map of the Moundiko Plateau portion of the trail. This is the actual route you will follow. It differs quite a lot from the maps on the signs. The dotted portion on the left shows the route I actually took. By all means, follow in my footsteps if you want to see a bit more woodland. Alternatively, keep to the track.
