Published 5th of April, 2022

In Part 2 of our walk along the Moundiko Nature Trail, we traverse the plateau and take in some breathtaking scenery. The Akamas is a great place to explore so do yourself a favour and check out this Nature Trail for yourself.

Good Sign, Bad Map

In the first part we had travelled from Kathikas up to the Moundiko Plateau, and had began the circular part of the walk. We begin Part 2 at Sign Number 9. The map on this sign is very confusing. It has been rotated 180 degrees, and is effectively upside down. Fortunately, the trail is fairly obvious so you won't get lost.

The sign makes up for its bad map by containing some very useful information:

From this point, there is a slight detour to the right of 20m length with return. The proposed detour passes through large Calabrian pine trees (Pinus brutia) and reaches the edge of a sharp cliff. This elevation difference is the result of an impressive paleo-landslide that has created an amphitheatric geological formation of exceptional beauty.

From here, there is a spectacular view of the Koufon / Erini gorges, opposite the Lipati plateau, and the grey bentonite lunar landscape to the right.

To the right of the route Moundiko there is an optional detour of 30m length where where is a cave. The cave may have been a catacomb at first, and it was later converted into a chapel. The cave is well hidden by the endemic shrub Ballota integrifolia.

Keep Going

There was another sign that had not yet been installed, but keep on the main track and you will be fine. When you do eventually have to turn left, you will know. It's not yet though!

To The Cave

As promised by the sign, we soon arrived at a diversion to the cave. I can never resist a cave, so I had to go and take a look.

Here?

When I first looked for the cave, I hadn't read the previous sign. So I walked past these bushes and continued looking for a more obvious tunnel.

Panoramic Views

I couldn't find the cave, but I did stumble upon some more, stunning views. I have always been puzzled by that ruin down there. How did people get to it?
