Kritou Marottou - A Typical Cypriot Village

Mysterious Imp

This took me by surprise though, on the way back to the car. It is the reverse of the religious icon we saw on the way down. I presume that is Mary in the shot, but there appears to be some sort of imp or devil to her bottom right. Does anybody know what this signifies?

We now arrive at a junction. One thing to note is that the signs are all in Greek. It is a common myth that 99% of Cypriots speak English. That may be true in the tourist areas, but if you venture out into rural Cyprus, this is not the case. And why should it be? This doesn't mean you will need an interpreter. Just bear in mind that if somebody speaks to you in broken English, it will be a lot better than any broken Greek you can muster. Also, a hearty Yassas (hello) and Efharisto (thank you) will work wonders.

Anyway, first things first. We shall take the high road, but will return here later to take the low road.

The High Road

We soon come to a church. Finding a church in a Cypriot village is a lot easier than not finding one. I don't know the name of this church though, and as it was Sunday morning when we visited, I didn't venture inside for fear of encroaching on a service. I did look on Google Maps later. There is a church marked in the village, but a review of it refers to a location 25km away, in Paphos Forest.

There is another junction here too. If you are exploring in a car and planning where to go next, be wary of heading towards Saramas. The drive to Anadiou is easy enough, but after that the road deteriorates somewhat. After rain it can be extremely treacherous, as the soil is a fine white powder which has the consistency of slushy ice after rain. Admitedly it has been a couple of years since I last drove the route, and it might have improved. But if you are in a hire car you are better off heading for Fyti.

View From The Church

I walked around the church, and stopped to admire the view. Not too shabby, is it?

Anadiou

According to the PRIO database, Anadiou, tucked away on the edge of Paphos Forest, near Kannaviou Reservoir, has been abandoned since 1974. Well, they forgot to pass the message on to Anadiou, because as you shall see, it is far from abandoned.

Simou

As promised at the end of our last blog about Skarfos Bridge, we now take a lot at the village of Skarfos, nestled 16km oustide of Polis, and see what it has to offer.

Chrysochou

Chrysochou lies nestled between Goudi and Polis, on the North West Coast of Cyprus. From the B7, where you will most likely have seen it, it is notable for the well preserved mosque that dominates its skyline. But Chrysochou has other points of interest, and a few surprises should your curiosity entice you to explore, including a fully restored water mill!

The Call of Choulou - Part 1

Choulou can be found on the central slopes of the Ezousa Valley, just up from Letymbou, and before you reach the lofty heights of Statos Agios Fotios and Panagia. It has a lot of history to it, and is well worth a visit. In this two-part series we take in some of the attractions.
