Geroskipou Antiquities Under Threat
There's a very nice church on the front at Paphos. It is built next to an area of land that until now has been empty, save for some archaeological ruins. There are now plans to build on the site, and protests are also planned to prevent any such development. We took our camera down to get a first hand view...
Ruins by the Church
Here's a view showing the church in question. Behind it you can see the Pioneer Beach Hotel. To the right of this photograph, on the other side of the clearing, you have the Louis Phaethon Beach Club. So the initial question is simple: why has no one built anything here before?
Recent Excavations
We first showed pictures of the dig here back in March 2018, when we took a springtime walk around Kato Paphos. They've done a lot since then, as you can see.
Beach Club View
It must have taken them ages to dig all the solid away from these walls. I wonder how far they go down?
Old War Defences?
As well as ancient ruins, there are also some more recent ruins. You can just see the pale grey concrete above the main excavations.
Divide and Conquer
You can see here how the archaeologists have divided the area into rectangles, and are digging out each area separately. Some areas have had more luck than others. I would hate to dig out an entire area in the summer heat, and only find a couple of rocks, so the people who dug out the area in the foreground here must have been quite pleased with their findings.

After our last blog of the strange monument near Mandria, we were delighted with the response, so we thought we would post these pictures of another forgotten site, this time in the heart of Geroskipou. Did anybody work on this site in the past, and if so, can they say why excavation work seems to have halted mid dig?Good Pages To Visit
