Around Polemi
Senior School

There are actually two schools in Polemi. The Junior School is on your right, with the Senior School on the left.

Olive Tree Tavern

We've now arrived at probably the most popular Eatery in Polemi. The Olive Tree is famous for its huuuge pork chops, though they serve a wide variety of traditional Cypriot food, and also offer a takeaway service. Seriously though, if you are used to pork chops in the UK then they are a completely different meal to the monsters you get served in Cypriot taverns. Served with chunky chips and a village salad, they are a challenge to finish, but delicious. And the only addition you need is some lemon juice and a sprinkling of salt, should you so desire.
Polemi Church Yard

We've gone through the commercial part of Polemi now. When you reach the church yard you are leaving the village and heading for the next one, called Psathi. Instead though, we are going to turn left here, down a farm track.
Typical Farm Track

And here it is. You can already see the main crops you seem to find in Polemi. There is an abundance of vineyards, interspersed with fields of wild wheat, or a similar weed. That's what it looks like anyway. Twice a year it will be harvested, presumably for animal feed. The vines are harvested annually, towards the end of summer.
Fire Hazard

During the summer months, the wheat fields in particular can be a bit of a fire hazard. This field is a stone's throw from our house. It caught on fire a few weeks ago, and you could see the speed of destruction on the webcam we have. In about two minutes the field was torched. The fire continued right up to the rear of the school and the Olive Tree. Fortunately no property was damaged, to the best of my knowledge, and the fire brigade arrived to put it all out.
Be very careful not to discard cigarettes out the window when driving through the countryside. If a field gets alight, it will be quickly burnt out, and there won't be anything you can do to stop it. Sure, the local homeowners, ourselves included, gathered with hoses and spades to put out the fires on the edge, but we were powerless when confronted with the centre of the fire. It was just too hot. Fortunately, the wind blew the fire between the houses. Since then, the field has been ploughed, and you could easily drive past without knowing there had been a fire there.

The Twelve Churches of Polemi
A while ago we reviewed a new map book on Cyprus. We noted that it showed a lot of churches in Polemi that we were unaware. Many of them were in ruins now, but we thought they deserved to be seen. So join us as we visit them all, or at least, what's left of them.
The Polemi Community Project
The Community Spirit is alive and well in at least one corner of Paphos! In Polemi, a group of volunteers, with the help of the local Mukhtar, are converting an area of wasteland into a Community Garden for the whole of Polemi to enjoy. A few days ago we paid them a visit to see how things were progressing.
Polemi Concentration Camp
As you approach Polemi from the B7, you pass the Kamanterena Winery on your right. Just beyond that, if you are paying attention, you will see a lookout tower that wouldn't look out of place on a WW2 movie. A couple of ancient armoured vehicles might also perk your interest, so pull over, and take a look at Polemi Concentration Camp.

Polemi in 500 Metres
I went for a stroll around Polemi this morning. I didn't use the SMS service, so had to stay within 500 metres of our house. Turns out the light was fantastic and I was able to take some nice pictures, assisted in part, by one of our cats who decided to follow me on my travels...

A couple of days ago I was up bright and early running some errands, and I couldn't help but notice the beautiful sunrise. Naturally enough, I took some pictures, and this put me in the mood to take some more snaps as I carried out my chores...Good Pages To Visit
