The Xeros River In Winter

Upstream

Ok, so I drew a blank at getting to Foinikas. I decided instead to see if it was possible to get anywhere close to Roudia Bridge. During the summer you can drive all the way upstream, and the bridge is at the edge of the forest. However, that was out of the question now. I was curious to see how far I could get though.

I should perhaps explain that I wasn't out on an "official" trip. My wife and daughter are both ill with winter bugs at the moment, and I had set off to Paphos to get some bread. Um, I got a bit distracted on the way. But the key point is I hadn't really come prepared for any major excursion, so there was only a certain amount of risk I could take roadwise.

Road Closed

The road to the donkey farm and Kelokedara had been closed. There was even police tape, which the local hunters had obviously driven over.

Lots of Water

To be honest, I've seen deeper fords in my time. I guess at the height of the rains this was more dangerous though.

Take The High Road

As I obey police cordons, I didn't cross the river, and instead elected to continue on the left hand side of the river. It occurred to me that I had never actually been up this stretch of the road, because normally I drive up the riverbed, as it is so much fun. So what would I find up here?

I liked the view here, especially how the river had carved a muddy path through the landscape.

Mystery Church

Ok, finding a ruined church isn't big news in Cyprus, but it is still worth investigating.

Sinti Monastery

It's time for another guest blog, and this time Max has taken a break from his minerals to show us somewhere a bit more spiritual. Over to you Max... Sinti Monastery is a very important ancient monument and not far away from Paphos, in the beautiful Xeros River Valley. I thought I would take a round trip. In order that people can visit the place all year round (even after a good Winter's rain) in a normal car I took the longer route over the hills where the roads nowadays are all properly surfaced. On the way back you can either take the same road (Winter) or use the short cut along the Xeros river bed which is only 8 km until the next village Nata.

Xeros River Ruins

It looks like the sun is here to stay now, and Cyprus is quickly turning brown. The Asprokremmos is no longer overflowing, and soon, the rivers will no doubt start to run dry again. Before that happens we decided to go for a drive up Xeros Valley, and explore some ruins by the river. If you fancy a paddle, don't wait too long...

Foinikas Views

We just can't keep away from Foinikas. Somebody posted some pics of the abandoned village on our Paphos Chat facebook group, and people were asking how to get there. We bumped an old blog showing the route, but decided that a film was also needed. While we were out shooting it, we decided to take some more shots, but this time we went for some outstanding views...
