Paphos-Polis road to be complete ‘by 2030 or 2032’

The highway connecting Paphos and Polis Chrysochous will be complete by either 2030 or 2032, Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades said on Friday.

Speaking during a visit to Polis Chrysochous with the town’s mayor Yiotis Papachristofi, he confirmed that the road will have four lanes, even if “it will take us a few years”, with the cost of the project in its entirety having been estimated at €330 million.

He added that a tender for the completion of the project’s first phase, where construction had begun but was cut off after the government cancelled a contract with Greek construction company Intrakat, will be held in the summer, with the hope of having a new contractor in place by September.

Then, he said, the first phase of the project should be completed within the next three years, while a tender for the second phase of the project is set to be opened in February next year.

The first phase of the project will link Paphos with the village of Stroumbi, while the second phase will connect Stroumbi with Polis Chrysochous.

Papachristofi said Vafeades had committed to visiting the area every three months to “monitor the schedules” of the road project and the road segment connecting to the village of Mesogi, as well as renovations at the Latchi harbour.

On the harbour, Vafeades said the cost of the planned renovations and upgrades will mount to around €50m.

“The aim of the project is to upgrade the marine and land infrastructure in the area, which is a key access gateway to Akamas, as well as an important starting point for pleasure boats and coastal cruises,” he said.

He added that the planned upgrades include “modern port facilities, additional berthing areas, and upgrades to the buildings and technical infrastructure for the maintenance and servicing of boats”.

At the same time, he said, “commercial and recreational activities” are planned for the area, as well as new buildings for the port police, the customs department, and the fisheries department.
