Polemi Rocks! (and pond)

Published 23rd of June, 2022

We return to the Polemi Countryside in this article, as we have unfinished business. There is a rocky outcrop that needs exploring, and Alex needs to be introduced to Polemi Pond. The results are very colourful, especially if you like frogs.

The Rocky Outcrop

When I am out exploring the drone can prove to be very useful. I had seen these rocks on a previous visit, and wanted to get up close and personal. Thanks to the drone, I was able to work out a route to them.

Full Of Holes

Like a lot of rocks in the area, these formations contain a lot of gypsum. This is soluble in water, causing all sorts of weird and wonderful shapes to emerge.

To get to the rocks, you have to come via Polemi Pond. You will hopefully remember that from a few articles back. This is a bird's eye view of the area. The track down to it is in terrible condition, and originally I thought that the newer, fainter track you can see going across the top field was a replacement route. However, using the drone I was able to see that it ended at the edge of the field. This begs the question, why is it there at all?

Dodgy Road

So the first thing I wanted to do was investigate that little mystery. However, I had a bit of a problem. The field I had parked in on my last visit had since been ploughed. I didn't fancy turning around in a freshly ploughed field, so instead decided to drive down the dodgy track to the pond. Whoever made the tracks through the field must also have driven down here, and if they could do it so I could I. First though, I spent half an hour filling up the bigger cracks in the road with rocks from the surrounding fields.

As I knew I would be returning to Polemi Pond, I brought Alex with me on this visit. Ponds are right up her street, but she spotted this beauty before we had even got there.

Polemi Pond

Outside of Winter and Spring, a lot of Cyprus is very arid. Polemi, centrally placed in Paphos and surrounded by vineyards, remains greener than most. It even has a village pond. Admitedly, you have to go for a bumpy drive to find it, and very few people probably know that it is there, but find it we did.
