The State Of The Paphos Reservoirs
Over the last two years we've written numerous articles on the dwindling levels of our reservoirs and it is about time we did an update. Since taking these pictures a few days ago, it hasn't stopped raining, but we are very far from the end of the water crisis.
View From Evretou
Our first port of call is the Evretou reservoir. This is the dam. Currently you can see rather a lot of it, as the reservoir is only 11% full.
A Few Years Ago
This is the reservoir when it is full. It looks a bit different then.
Currently the reservoir is only just over 10% full. The rains we have had so far have had very little impact on the water level. The reasons for this are, I believe, threefold. Firstly, the ground is very dry and will need time to get saturated with water again before it will flow to the reservoirs. Secondly, a lot of the rain fell between the reservoirs and the sea, and would have not been captured. Finally, to cope with water shortages, more bore holes have been drilled. The water they have removed will also need to be replaced, before it makes its way to the reservoirs.
Here you can see the overflow. I remember seeing a similar view a few years ago, and thinking that it probably never got full.
Back In 2022
But here is the same view just a few years ago. The water is flowing down to the water treatment plant on the other side of the hill.
