Art Is Everywhere
One of the first things Philippos mentioned was that there were sculptures and art everywhere in the park, if you looked for it. This fence - just imagine having something like this in your garden! - is a great example of that.
Female Spiders
The spiders are not just spiders. If you look at the spider's abdomen, it looks very much like a woman's thighs.
Very Female
Plus, it has boobs. This is a common theme in Philippos' work. I don't mean the boobs, I mean combining identities, or ideas.
But boobs are fairly common too...
Glorious Gastropods
Snails too, are also a common theme.
So, where shall we start with Philippos? He was born in Famagusta in 1957, and had to leave in 1974 following the Turkish Invasion. While in the army, he was captured and held for several months. This loss of freedom and captivity had an enormous impact on him. But it was not until he was in his 30s that he was able to express that feeling through his art. And this part of his story is truly remarkable...
