Polemi Rain
Polemi River
Anyway, I thought I would have a quick drive around Polemi to try and film some of the sights. I had visited this location for a previous blog but wanted to see it in full flow.
I'm not going to show you loads more pictures of this scene, but I was curious as to where the water actually went. It must flow under the B7, through the hills and eventurally arrive at the Mavrokolympos reservoir. Incidentally, that is now full. So anyway, if it flows under the B7, what is it like there? There's only one way to find out, so I continued along the road and then turned back towards Polemi on the B7. At the Polemi junction I turned left and parked up past where all the cars park.
Lemonari Fountain
Now this was interesting. Walking from the car park, I came across an area that in summer would be worth a bit of an explore. There was an information sign:
The Lemonari Fountain, which used to provide good drinking water to the inhabitants of the village, was used until the 1950s, when the water flow just stopped. Lemonari was an idyllic place. Under the trees, a small stream with clear water flowed through rocks and shrubs. The women used to go down to the fountain to do their washing, laying it on a rock or bush and beating it using a wooden beater, until it was clean. They would then lay the washed clothes on rocks and shrubs around the fountain to dry.
Incidentally, the notice board also showed a guided walk around Stroumpi and the surrounds. We will be doing a series of blogs on walks when the weather improves, and I will add this to the list, as it is not very long and easy to access. Perfect for a summer evening stroll... ahhhhh, remember the sun?
The Fountain Today
I couldn't get a good look at the actual fountain itself, as it is more or less under water.
The water has flowed from the right, through the vineyards, and is heading to the B7. I wonder what this spot looks like when it is not under water?
