There is a lovely mural on the wall here too, with an information sign:

PAPHOS MOSAIC 2017

In 2012 the people of The Paphos region where asked to give practical support for the town's bid to be named the 2017 European Capital of Culture.

Sharen Taylor had the idea that a community project could be set up to provide a mosaic image reflecting the 2017 Capital of Culture symbol. This came about because mosaic work is part of the cultural heritage of Cyprus and Sharen's idea was that it would be a modern day legacy for generations to come.

Sharen started the project with eight Cypriot Fine Art students working as volunteers. They went and visited all the events in Paphos. At this time Sharen decided that it would be a good idea to use the project to raise funds for the Friends Hospice. At events, the project was promoted by recruiting people to produce mosaic segments in exchange for donations. Sharen visited local schools and gave talks on the cultural heritage of mosaic work. In turn, the children raised money and provided further segments for the project.

Along the way Sharen continued to recruit volunteers and eventually with 97 of the 100 segments completed, a two day workshop was set up in the garden of the Paphos 2017 Headquarters. People were invited to come along and work under supervision f a further team of volunteers, mounting the 97 panels and grouting them. The event was supported by in excess of 200 people, including the work committee of Paphos 2017.

More volunteers then helped with the cleaning, polishing, marking up and various other tasks required to achieve the accurate finish required on all the pieces.

More than 2000 people have been involved in this project and 3000 euros has been raised for the Friends Hospice. Several professional bodies have provided their services free of charge and hundreds of man hours have been taken up getting the project to its position today. Numerous local businesses and companies have provided services and equipment, including Sharen Taylor, to enable this project to get this far.

We are honoured to have installed this mosaic jewel in the wonderful Attikon Theatre.

Thank you Paphos Municipality

Interesting Exit

Interesting Exit

The area here is beautifully designed, and must look lovely when an event is held here.

Big Screen

Big Screen

I am a bit annoyed actually. They showed 2001 A Space Odyssey a few weeks ago. It would have been amazing to watch it here, though I think I would bring a cushion with me.

The exit was closed, so I had to retrace my steps back past the mural and restaurant.

Kennedy Square

Kennedy Square

I ended up standing in Kennedy Square, opposite the new Documentation Centre. The question is: where do I go next? Find out soon.
