Old Choletria
The road leading to the church is fairly overgrown, compared to the rest of Old Choletria. This area is almost exclusively in ruin. It is also nearest to the centre of the valley. Looking back up the hill, you can see that the more populated areas are further from the valley floor. This would suggest the threat was from below.
Abandoned Car
We found this car up by the church, if anybody has lost it. I have a feeling it has been there for some time though.
Prefab Sprout
Standing close to the church, you can't help noticing that it isn't a typical Cypriot construction. The main body looks more like it was built by the UK Army.
If anybody knows the history of this particular church, please leave a comment.
Interesting Times Ahead?
So what is the future of Old Choletria? Will it continue to re-emerge from the ruins of the past? And if it does, will it be safe, or at the whim of the next great storms? After all, Cyprus needs as much rain as it can get at the moment, but what will be the consequence of such a deluge to places like this?

Foinikas Revisited
When we first blogged about Foinikas it was springtime, and the abandoned village was bathed in a sea of yellow. It was always an essential destination on our holidays, but we had never been in Spring, so it came as a pleasant surprise. However, it made it difficult to explore, as you never know what you might tread on when you have to wade through thigh-high flowers. As frequently happens with our blogs, people posted more information about the site in the comments. So we decided to pay another visit a few days ago, and explore it in more depth...Abandoned Villages - Statos
Statos is unusual, as abandoned villages go. People deserted it not because of inter-communal fighting, but because of the threat of landslides. And then, no sooner had they emptied, some of the abandoned buildings were repopulated. Were villagers returning, or had outsiders moved in, prepared to take the risk of landslide?Abandoned Villages - Agios Fotios
Given that I wrote a blog about Statos last week, it would be unfair of me not to cover its close neighbour, Agios Fotios. Their histories are intertwined, as they were both abandoned for the same reason. Indeed, they merged to form a new, single town, called Statos Agios - Fotios. So what was left behind...Good Pages To Visit
