Cyprus In Pictures - February 2023
Polemi Sunrise
The mists of Polemi will always have a special place in my heart. The first time I launched the drone skyward through the mist I was blown aware by the simple beauty that emerged. Nature puts on a dazzling display that normally only the birds will bear witness to.
Polemi has been known for its mists for years, too. A while ago I was reading an account of a Victorian Traveller's journey through Cyprus. They speak of arriving at Polis then travelling to Paphos through areas that were thick with mist in the mornings. It was a fascinating but sobering read. I remember the traveller recommended that female solo travellers should bring crackers for the Polis locals. I originally thought they were referring to crackers of the cheesy biscuit variety, but it turns out he meant fire crackers, which could be flung at the locals to get them to move out of the way. I can't remember the name of the author of the book, but I wouldn't be surprised if his surname was "Farage".
Low Tides
Spring Time brings with it the famously low Spring Tides. There were reports that the lowness might have been as a result of the terrible Earthquake in Turkey and Syria, but in all honesty, they are called Spring Tides for a reason.
It's A Carnival!
The month ended with Paphos Carnival, and tens of thousands of people lined the newly-renovated streets of Paphos to celebrate, in the first such event since the Pandemic ended.
Future Prospects
We will end our wander through February with a look at the wilder part of Coral Bay. That's Corallia Beach in the far distance, and in our next article we shall take a closer look at the area beyond it.
