The Anerades Nature Trail
Beautiful Wilderness
At the start the trail is fairly gentle, and winds through the beautiful woodland.
Interesting Flora
cyprus is notorious for its painful vegetation. Fortunately there were no caper shrubs around, but these vicious acorns made me smile.
Free Range Marrow
Alex spotted this. A marrow must have escaped from a nearby field and was making a desperate bid for freedom...
Dam Fine View
This is Kolokouris Dam. There is a sign here with a tale to tell:
As hikes proceed along the trail, they will come across a number of small cultivated areas, which are primarily tree plantations. Throughout the Kolokouris River valley, the plantations are mainly citrus orchards, and include Orange, Lemon, Mandarin and Bitter orange trees. To a lesser degree there are walnut, carob, Loquat, Fig, Olive, Prickly Pear and Almond trees, as well as several vine cultivations.
The small dam was built in 1962 to irrigate the above cultivations. In 1980 a borehole was opened and an electric water pump installed, allowing a more extensive area to be irrigated throughout the year. The region is noted for its geological profile, comprised of sedimentary rocks of Pachna's formation: Impressive stalactites are located opposite the dam, which were formed by the long, continuous, slow water flow from the rock that overlooks the dam.
