Agios Efraim Walk

Let Us Pray

The stone floor you can see here would definitely suggest that.

New Flowers

These shrines get used too! There were new flowers in the water bottle, so somebody had been for a visit here before me today. I started my walk in the mid-afternoon.

Locked Shut

This little cupboard was locked shut. Does this mean that somebody must maintain this shrine, and visit regularly? Perhaps a priest even says mass here on a a certain Saints day?

Litter

One thing I couldn't help notice though, is the amount of litter strewn about the place. These bottles are used as vases and fuel holders. But once empty, they are just discarded. No effort is made to take them away and to make the area look tidy. Why is this?

The obvious answer would be a lack of respect. But this isn't a beach, or a park. This is a shrine, in the middle of nowhere. Whoever made the trek here to pray, did so with respect. Clearly though, they don't see dumping this rubbish here as a disrespectful act. It is like the rubbish is invisible to them. They don't dump the rubbish because they want to be rude to their God. They do it because they don't see it as a problem.

Imagine visiting a place that got uptight about footprints. You could walk around all day upsetting people without knowing it. This is like that.

Perhaps my hope of having a "Keep Cyprus Tidy" campaign is naive? Perhaps a good proportion of the locals think it already is tidy? What do you do then?

Enjoy The View

I am at the top of this hill, so the views are even nicer than before.
