The Gorge From Above

Turning right, I passed through a farm, and then came upon this Building Site. Some new villas were sprouting up, and they looked pretty nice. I parked in an area of wasteland just after them, to have a look at the gorge. I noticed that the wind had dropped a bit, so I decided to launch the drone.

The shots on this page were all taken with the drone. I might make a film in due course of my footage, but I was more interested in assessing the gorge from above rather than making a swanky movie.

Towards Pano Arodes

There are a lot of gorges in Akamas that are worth exploring. It's not just Avakas. I read a couple of weeks ago that Pano Arodes Municipality (or it might have been Ineia) wanted to make four more of them more accessible to the public. So hopefully they will become easier to explore in due course. If you do decide to try on your own though, do bear in mind that they are prime locations for snakes. Every time I have explored the gorge right next to Avakas, I have narrowly avoided stepping on adders. So don't go exploring if you are unprepared.

Into The Gorge

So, is this gorge worth exploring? Let's take the drone a bit lower and have a look...

Potential

Well, on this shot I can see the riverbed, and it is surrounded by steep cliffs, so there is definite potential for exploring. If I can walk up the riverbed without getting swamped in vegetation, I will be able to have a nice adventure.

The Far Side of the Akamas

Last October when I had the weekend to myself, I resolved to do a geocache that had eluded me up until now, due to it's remoteness. Given that people were interested in the Akamas Church blog I posted a while back, I thought I would turn the photos I took into another blog...

Liesegang Rings in the Akamas

As 2016 draws to a close we decided to take a final trip to the Akamas. We have been trying to locate some interesting fossils we saw a few years ago, and the last couple of times we had tried we had ended up somewhere else. We found the right route this time though.

The Akamas By Car

Nothing beats exploring the Akamas by car. A decent 4x4 can take you to places you would never normally find on foot, and the aircon can be a real life-saver. Some routes into the Akamas are bumpier than others. In this blog take a relatively bump free route which would suite the more cautious amongst you.
