I remember that fireplace from my first visit.

The interior of the hospital is actually remarkably clean in places. The floor here looks like it has been swept at some point. I mean, all those windows have been broken, so by rights there should be a lot more glass here, strewn around...

...instead though, the majority of the floor is clean. Why is that? If somebody was kipping here, there would no doubt be evidence of it.

Cock And Balls

The graffiti artists excelled themselves here. A cock and balls has been a doodler's staple since art began. In its simplest form, it requires no words to get its message across. It has been used for centuries as a simple act of rebellion. Check out this article if you don't believe me.

Don't worry, it is from The Guardian, and totally safe.

Here though, they have taken the idea and expanded on it magnificently. A round window becomes a beckoning egg, and we cannot help but wonder whether George merely had a birthday, or was conceived here? Perhaps that would explain the clean floor?

Minesweeper

This graffiti puzzled me to start with, until I recognised it as a rendition of an old game of Windows Minesweeper. I just looked it up, and though Minesweeper is no longer shipped with Windows, you can download it for free from Microsoft. The latest version is over 100Mb in size. Considering that the original version was bundled with Windows on a few floppies, that is quite some bloat. It is worth noting though, that the latest version doesn't look much like the original - featured in the drawing - so whoever did this graffiti must have clocked up a few years themselves.

Incidentally, if you are tempted to download Minesweeper don't bother. It is now full of ads.

Amiantos Mine

Amiantos Mine can be found in the Troodos Mountains. It used to be the largest asbestos mine in Europe, but now it is gathering rust. For obvious reasons you cannot explore the mine itself, but there is a nearby visitor centre and nature reserve. Also, nestled in the hills you will find the old workers' quarters and the hospital that looked after them. Let's take a look.

The Abandoned Hospital at Amiantos Mines

The Cyprus Asbestos Mine is situated right in the heart of Troodos forest. Following a continuous operation of 84 years, the mine came to a sudden closure in 1988, leaving behind large volumes of waste tips, a badly designed mine pit and an unacceptable environmental scar to an otherwise heavily forested natural beauty area. It also left behind a hospital, which now stands abandoned on the other side of the valley. While environmental steps have been taken to turn the area near the mines into a nature park, the hospital has been let to nature.
