Mandria Mysteries
Old gun mount?
I can only presume that these pill boxes contained mounted guns, which went on here. It would explain the lack of a roof.
More Pillboxes
But further away from Paphos, you can spy two more pill boxes. These ones are right next to each other.

The code on this reads 8A311.
The Sea is Encroaching
I imagine that then these were built, the pillbox on the left was on dry land, and the pillbox on the right was on a plateau. So you can see how far the water has encroached in 40 odd years.
Mystery #3 is simple: Why are there so many pillboxes in such a small space?
The All Important Map
If you have any answers to the mysteries posed here, please do leave a response. And why not try visiting the location yourself? If you use the map, the shed is fairly simple to locate.
Now, by itself, this location doesn't really warrant a trip from Paphos, especially if you are on a tight schedule. However, it is close to the ancient Sugar Mill and the Kouklia Memorial, not to mention Kouklia itself. So all in all there is plenty to see around here. You could even stop for a bite to eat at Michalis Party...

Paphos Desalination Plant
We were exploring the countryside around Mandria recently, and blogged about the Olive Factory we found there. At the same time, we noticed a rather large white building nearby. When we found out it was the old abandoned desalination plant, we had to investigate...The Ancient Sugar Factory At Kouklia
As you drive along the A6 from Paphos to Limassol, you will pass the Asprokemmos Dam on your left. Just after that you will see some old ruins. This is the site of an ancient sugar factory.Kouklia Memorial
We recently blogged about a little shrine by the motorway. It turns out that it was placed there in memory of two soldiers who lost their lives in a helicopter accident. I was confused myself, because I knew there was a helicopter crash memorial, but it was a little further away from Paphos, near Kouklia. An internet search revealed that there had been two crashes. So in the interest of fairness, I thought we should take a look at the other shrine. It isn't visible from the motorway, but if you take the trouble to find it, you will not be disappointed, as it is a lovely memorial...Ancient Lemba
Yesterday a news headline caught my eye: "An ancient Chalcolithic settlement site in Lemba in Paphos urgently requires maintenance, according to the local community leader". We had visited this site before, so I thought I should revisit it to see just how urgent the maintenance was...Kissonerga Mosfilia
Tucked away in the lower reaches of Kissonerga, lies a site of great historical importance. Similar in appearance to the ancient village of Lemba, which is currently closed for maintenance, Kissonerga Mosfilia is a perfect way to spend half an hour if you fancy something a little different. Like most of our findings, it was a happy accident that brought us to this ancient settlement. We were avoiding a roadblock and happened to pass this sign on our way to the coast road. Brown signs often signal something interesting, so we stopped to take a look...The Xeros River Flows!
The River Xeros flows into the Asprokremmos Reservoir, and when that is full, it flows right out again. So where does it go once it leaves? We decided to find out...Good Pages To Visit
