Timios Stavros Monastery

I certainly wouldn't drive all the way from Paphos just to see this church, but if you are in the area it is well worth popping in. Anogyra has a number of other attractions, including Oleastro Olive Park and Museum. So why not make a day of it?

On The Inside

If you are lucky, you will visit the site when the door is unlocked. If that is the case you will be able to see the ancient murals inside.

While most of the walls are plain they do at least look well maintained.

In our final image you can see one of the more substantial murals. Imagine what the chapel would have looked like when all the walls were like this? Despite marked wear and tear, they remain exceptional examples of Palaiologan painting in Cyprus.

Of course, this raises another question: what is a Palaiologan painting? Well, The Palaiologan Renaissance is the final period in the development of Byzantine art. It coincided with the reign of the Palaiologoi, the last dynasty to rule the Byzantine Empire (1261–1453), and essentially preceded and predetermined the Greek and Italian Renaissance.

Tala Monastery From Above

The Holy Monastery of Saint Neophytos the Recluse lies at the top end of Tala, nestled in a narrow valley. Built in the 12th century, it is now one of the most famous monasteries in Cyprus. Owing to its somewhat secluded nature it is difficult to get a decent look at the whole building, so we sent our drone up to get the clearest view.
