The Shrine By The Motorway

August Snow!

Some of the rocks looked like they had a covering of snow on them, they were so white.

Heavy Rocks

However, most of them are very large, so they are really there to be looked at rather than put on display in your garden.

Grey Matter

I particularly liked this one. I will say this though: long trousers are a must if you are exploring the area. The rocks are often surrounded by thistles and other prickly bushes. Also, if you slip and bang your leg, these rocks can be very sharp. I speak from personal experience!

Erosion

Aside from all the crystals, there are fascinating rock formations all over the place. It is a geologist's dream.

Hopefully with this blog we have shown you that even the more mundane places around Paphos have surprises in store for you. You don't have to venture far to find an interesting place to explore.

Very Ouch

One last shot, just in case you thought I was joking about the thorns. This is no place for shorts!

The spring flowers in Cyprus are starting to bloom, and some are more prominent than others. The giant fennel is one such plant. It can dominate an area and put on a stunning display, as we shall see...

The Evretou Grave

Last time we walked around Evretou Dam, we observed a solitary grave on the opposite bank, half way up a hill. After the blog was published we were approached by somebody who keeps a log of the Turkish Cypriot Graves on the island. Kouklia Memorial

We recently blogged about a little shrine by the motorway. It turns out that it was placed there in memory of two soldiers who lost their lives in a helicopter accident. I was confused myself, because I knew there was a helicopter crash memorial, but it was a little further away from Paphos, near Kouklia. An internet search revealed that there had been two crashes. So in the interest of fairness, I thought we should take a look at the other shrine. It isn't visible from the motorway, but if you take the trouble to find it, you will not be disappointed, as it is a lovely memorial...
