Akourdaleia Church And Mill
Votive Offering

I do love the little votive offerings (prayer aids) you find in these churches.

Picture Of A Picture

This picture is unusual to me. It depicts - I presume - Mary, holding a picture of Jesus Christ. Is it an evolved form of the "Mary The Guide" style we often find in churches?
Domed Roof

The roof is domed and in good condition. There were no signs of any murals though. I mention this because in years gone by the church was said to be adorned with frescoes.
Another Mill

On the other side of the valley you can se another mill. I don't think there is any way of getting to it that doesn't involve a fair bit of bushwhacking though. It would be interesting to buzz the drone around it to have a better look.
Parting Shot

Apparently, the church was built in the 15th century. I would imagine it has been restored at some point, like the mill we have already seen. There is something strange about visiting an abandoned tourist attraction. It kind of sums up the written history of the area though. If you read about Akourdaleia, it speaks of twin villages in sharp decline. However, the more recent, as yet undocumented history, would have to include a fair amount of new building work and re-population of the area. It certainly deserves to have life flowing through it, as the surrounding countryside is astoundingly beautiful.
I'm not yet done here. There is a drone to fly, and a gorge to explore properly. But that will have to wait for another day.

Theletra Waterfall
The abandoned village of Theletra, between Stroumpi and Kathikas, is a great place to visit and explore. Equally fascinating is the surrounding countryside, which consists of forgotten tracks and overgrown orchards and vineyards. The other day we went exploring, looking for a church. I am still not sure whether we found it or not, but we had a lot of fun on the way, and discovered a little waterfall...
