Martiri Gorge
Deeper Waters
If you want to get further than this, you are going to have to take a plunge. This was one thing I was a bit wary of. If you go to Avakas Gorge, and walk upstream, it eventually gets narrower, and there are a number of dead birds dotted around. When I was up by the bridge, I noticed that pigeons were living in the gorge too. It therefore followed that there would be dead birds down here, and plenty of bird crap. Consequently, paddling / swimming through pools of water loses a bit of its charm. Fortunately though, the pigeons were on the other side of the bridge, so this part of the gorge was pleasant enough.
This Way
In truth, I didn't travel very far through the gorge. I was on my own though, and I didn't want to get stuck. I suppose if I did get stuck, I could just keep heading downstream. Eventually I would arrive at Adonis Baths. But that would be a long way back to the car.
End Of The Road
This was where I stopped. I would like to have another go, but I would want to come a bit better prepared.
Quite A Drop
Ever since I arrived in Cyprus, I have been looking for hidden gorges that weren't widely known. Finally I hit jackpot. I was slightly annoyed because I explored this area a few years ago, and got as far as the vineyard in the first blog. I looked on the map and saw this area, but put exploring it on the back-burner.
Heading Back
So I turned round and started heading back upstream. My towel awaited me in the car.

eBookCyprus Road Trip 01: the Kathikas - Panagia Loop
Let me take you on a journey around the region of Paphos, Cyprus. Starting at Paphos itself, we travel to Akoursos, then Kathikas, Kritou Terra and Simou. We continue past Lasa and Kannaviou, before taking in the delights of Panagia. Getting a bit more adventurous, we visit the abandoned villages of Statos and Agios Fotios, before passing through Choulou, Letymbou and Polemi, and rejoining the main Paphos - Polis road.
The route is suitable for all types of vehicle, and requires no off-roading. The guide contains about 130 photographs including shots of all the road signs you need to pay attention to, as well as some of the highlights you may experience along the way.
There are also several maps which will help you keep your bearings.
You can do this journey in a day, or you can break it up into chunks. You can also do it in reverse, to get some completely different views. It is entirely up to you.
